Google Earth
The new Google Earth is available. The White House is again not pixelated out. And it appears to feature the same or slightly-improved 3D White House. Pete Sharkey is working on a vastly better 3D White House that I just can't wait for, so I'm including a picture of his West Wing so everyone can encourage him. (if you haven't examined his 3D Oval Office, you are missing a treat.)Some automatic links load with Google Earth so that you see little dots that represent more information available on Wikipedia and elsewhere. If anyone can figure out how to make one that links to the White House Museum and/or Pete's 3D Oval Office, that would be awesome.
Update: Anonymous has pointed us to a commercial 3-D White House and 3-D Oval Office. I don't much about 3-D software, so I don't know what you need to view such things.
Update: I hereby award Pete Sharkey the Reathel Odum Award for Distinguished Service ("the Odie").

Thank you so much for your compliment and support Derek. Thanks to your recent postings of West Wing proposed floor plans from the Truman era I was finally able to realize what the accurate measurements of certain parts of the West Wing truly are. Hence the need to redo a great deal of the model.
I'll just qualify what is being built that one model will only be of the entire White House and the grounds.
Interior models can only be built one room at a time and available one model at a time. The reason for this is that just the grounds and building exterior file would be huge, to try and include interior details would be impossible. It's simply too much RAM needed to do both.
It's also worth while to point out that I decided not to try to make the WH sketchup model implantable in Google Earth because with the model being gigantic with memory it would make it impossible for anyone to navigate in Google Earth with such a huge model in it. Even the Google Earth navigation tools are very limiting. It simply made no sense to try to offer such a feature.
Google Earth by itself requires a great deal of processor speed to make the tour features run at a reasonable rate. Add a 20-30MB model to it and the program would likely freeze.
All very understandable. I can't imagine trying to do interiors and exteriors in full detail in one model. I'm impressed merely the exterior detail you have now.
Even if the model is too big to implant in Google Earth, there must be a way to put one of those information dots in there that links out to it the way some of them link out to Wikipedia now. I'm sure *many* people will be interested in a really good WH model.
Yes Derek. I have indeed noticed that there is a way topost a link. Even a little tag with a jpeg would work.

Why in MY day we had to build our architectural models by hand (gasp!), but we got to play with the little cars that were put out front to give the models scale.
Yes, Pete's Oval Office model is wonderful - really looking forward to seeing the completed model.
